3 Claude Code Mods: Gatekeeper, Claude-to-Claude and a Live Dashboard
Claude Code can be extended like a modded game. You add small pieces (subagents, hooks, a status line) and it starts working differently. You don't have to write them yourself: describe what you want and Claude creates the files.
1. The gatekeeper. A subagent pinned to a cheaper, faster model (Haiku) takes the easy jobs: typo fixes, renames, small edits. Your main model only gets the hard work, so your limit lasts longer.
2. Claude talks to Claude. A planner subagent writes the plan, a builder subagent does the work, and they hand it back and forth until it is done.
3. Your own dashboard. A custom status line at the bottom of Claude Code shows what is going on (model, context used, cost, current task) without you asking.
All three are free. You only need Claude Code.
Prompts & steps
- Install Claude Code and open it in your project folder: claude
- Mod 1, gatekeeper: run /agents → Create new agent → describe it as "handles small edits like typos and renames" and choose the Haiku model. It is saved in .claude/agents/
- Mod 2, Claude to Claude: in /agents create two more: a "planner" (only writes a step-by-step plan) and a "builder" (implements the plan). Then ask: "use the planner, then hand the plan to the builder"
- Mod 3, dashboard: run /statusline and describe it, e.g. "show the model, context used, session cost and the current git branch". Claude writes the script and turns it on
- Any other mod: just describe it in plain words, e.g. "make a hook that runs my tests after every edit", and Claude builds it
